A Natural Solution to Erosion Control

The use of natural fibers for erosion and sedimentation control dates back to the beginning of the last century. The main problems in the early natural fibre erosion control blankets (example jute mats) were low tensile strength, high elongation and low durability. These drawbacks restricted their use to only less severe erosion problems. An alternate natural fiber that has drawn the attention of the erosion and sedimentation control industry is coir, the coconut fibre.

The coconut fibre is an abundant renewable natural resource with an extremely low decomposition rate and a high strength compared to other natural fibers. Different coir types and their characteristics have made coir the most versatile natural fibre for erosion and sedimentation control.

Coir GeoTextiles manufactured from the coconut Coir fibre - a woven coir yarn mesh - is an ideal protection against soil erosion. Among the particular advantages of coir as a GeoTextile are its high resistance to rotting, its constant tensile strength under dry, wet and frozen conditions, its ability to act as an insulating material and its capability of withstanding high velocity water flow (because of its thickly woven strands). Unbleached woven coir fabric is especially suited to erosion control of steep slopes, as it is more permeable than the soil that it protects and at the same time provides sufficient bulk to impede rapid water flow.

In todays environmentally sensitive soil erosion and sedimentation control designs where a slow rate of decomposition and a high retention of strength is important in field applications coir GeoTextiles can be used effectively in a variety of erosion control situations such as: erosion control of slopes along highways and railways, irrigation canals and rivers, erosion control at water storage sites, re-vegetation of batters, median strips and embankments, stabilization of sand dunes, lining of ditches and drains, weed control, retention of moisture around ornamental shrubs, landscaping in parks airports and residential areas, sports field restoration, golf course construction/restoration, as safety nets around construction sites, as a greenhouse cover and on ski slopes.

Additionally, we supply non -woven coir Geo Textiles - Rubberized Coir mats.
